India's bitumen market: upcoming demand climb-up
Having considered many ongoing roads & also construction projects remained unsettled in India, it is expected to be faced with a (10mn t) bitumen consumption increase in the country over April 2024-March 2025
According to Argus report, Nitin Gadkari, India’s transport minister, has recently declared: “We have the largest road network in the world. 90pc of roads use bituminous layers. Bitumen consumption in FY 2023-24 was 88 lakh tons In FY2024-25, it is expected to be 100 lakh tons (10 mn t).”
While there are many pending state road works besides older projects, the main issue is Funding. Some figures in the market also believe that contractors can help in this and get the work done. Furthermore, many importers state that these road projects will be supported financially this year; as Argus says.
Additionally, in some states such as Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh, it is most expected to witness a restart of construction projects since the upcoming state elections.
As about 1,375 national road projects are under construction, the ministry has predicted that they will be completed during the current and the next fiscal year which means about 20,000km of roads and highways.
