Bitumen (VG20)

VG20 Bitumen is a medium-viscosity paving binder used in asphalt and road construction applications where a controlled combination of consistency and resistance to traffic-induced deformation is required.

With a higher viscosity than VG10 but lower than VG30 and VG40, VG20 occupies an intermediate position within the viscosity-grade bitumen classification within the conventional viscosity-grade bitumen classification. This makes it suitable for projects where the binder must provide greater structural consistency than lower-viscosity grades while maintaining practical handling and asphalt production characteristics.

VG20 Bitumen for Asphalt & Pavement Applications

VG20 is used as a paving binder in asphalt mixtures and road construction projects where the selected viscosity must correspond with the expected climatic and traffic conditions.

Its intermediate viscosity characteristics make it suitable for a range of conventional pavement applications, particularly where a balance between binder workability and resistance to deformation is required.

Performance Characteristics of VG20

VG20 has a minimum absolute viscosity of 1600 Poise at 60°C under commonly referenced viscosity-grade specifications. This places it between VG10 and the higher-viscosity VG30 and VG40 grades.

The increased viscosity compared with VG10 provides greater binder consistency at elevated temperatures. This can be advantageous in asphalt pavements where repeated wheel loading and warmer service conditions require improved resistance to flow and permanent deformation.

At the same time, VG20 retains processing characteristics suitable for conventional hot-mix asphalt production when the material is handled at appropriate temperatures and according to the relevant technical procedures.

As with all paving binders, however, the performance of the finished pavement is determined by the interaction of the binder with aggregate gradation, mixture design, compaction, pavement structure, climate and traffic.

VG20 for Moderate Traffic Conditions

Road pavements experience different levels of mechanical stress depending on traffic volume, axle loads and road geometry.

VG20 can be considered for pavement systems where the required binder consistency is higher than that normally associated with lower-viscosity grades, but where the service conditions do not justify the use of a higher-viscosity binder.

This positioning makes VG20 relevant to conventional road networks, urban routes and selected highway applications where moderate traffic loading and climatic conditions are compatible with the grade.

Particular attention should be given to areas exposed to concentrated loading, frequent braking or acceleration, and high pavement temperatures, as these factors can increase the risk of permanent deformation.

VG20 vs. VG10

The principal distinction between VG10 and VG20 is viscosity.

VG10 has a minimum absolute viscosity of 800 Poise at 60°C, whereas VG20 has a minimum of 1600 Poise. VG20 therefore provides a more consistent binder under elevated-temperature conditions, while VG10 offers lower viscosity and greater workability.

In practical terms, VG10 may be considered for applications requiring a relatively softer and more workable binder, while VG20 can be selected where increased binder consistency and resistance to temperature-related flow are required.

The appropriate grade should always be established from the project specification rather than from viscosity values alone.

VG20 and Penetration Grade Bitumen

Viscosity-grade bitumen differs from penetration-grade bitumen in the primary method used for classification.

Penetration grades such as 60/70 and 80/100 are classified mainly according to penetration depth measured at 25°C. Viscosity grades such as VG10 and VG20 are classified according to viscosity characteristics at specified temperatures.

This approach provides an additional way of evaluating binder behavior during asphalt production and under elevated-temperature conditions.

The two classification systems should not be treated as exact one-to-one equivalents. Any equivalency or substitution should be confirmed against the relevant national standard and project specification.

Production & Quality Assurance

VG20 Bitumen is manufactured through controlled refinery processes using suitable petroleum-derived feedstocks. Processing conditions are managed to obtain the required viscosity and physical properties specified for the product.

Consistency between shipments is particularly important for international asphalt projects. Nexoil therefore bases product acceptance on the agreed technical specification and shipment-specific laboratory results rather than relying solely on the commercial grade designation.

Each shipment can be accompanied by a Certificate of Analysis (COA). Where requested by the buyer, independent inspection and additional conformity procedures may also be incorporated into the export process.
